Whalers Beat Mystique, 5-2
Anchorage and Music City duked it out and the Whalers came out victorious.

Anchorage beat Music City on the strength of starter Dave Newsome's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 5-2. Newsome went 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 9 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. His record improves to 2-3. Jaime Mendoza nailed down his 6th save.

The Mystique had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Whalers going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 27-year old catcher Fred Hughes came to the plate. Hughes hit a 2-run double on a first pitch cutter from Music City hurler Pete Bernal. It was Hughes's 1st double of the year.

"Enjoyed this one," Hughes told the Anchorage Chronicle. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

The Whalers go to 13-19 with the win.
